Praseodymium oxide (Pr6O11)

Praseodymium oxide (Pr6O11)

Praseodymium oxide is a black, water-insoluble powder. The main field of application is the production of pigments for tiles and glazes.

In 1885, founder Carl Auer von Welsbach succeeded in separating the rare earth metal didymium into praseodymium and neodymium, both of which form salts with different colours. This different colouring is the main reason for using these elements. In addition, praseodymium oxide is also used in alloys for special applications.

Pr6O11 is mainly used as a pigment for colouring glass (table glass, decorative glass) and ceramics (ceramic colourants for tile glazes). It is used as an element in the production of magnets as well as in the production of catalysts.

Reduced to Pr2O3, it acts as a corrosion inhibitor (coating) for substrates such as aluminium.
